1. Protected vs. Non-Protected Domestic Status
Under NEPRA regulations, domestic electricity consumers in Pakistan are split into two major tariff categories: Protected and Non-Protected.
The 6-Month 200-Unit Benchmark Rule
A consumer is classified as Protected if their monthly energy consumption has remained at or below 200 units for the past 6 consecutive billing months. If your consumption crosses 200 units in even a single month, your account is reclassified as Non-Protected, shifting you to higher step-up slab rates and tier-based fixed monthly charges.

3. LESCO Peak & Off-Peak Hours Timing (Summer / Winter)
For commercial connections and 3-phase domestic connections equipped with Time-of-Use (TOU) digital meters, LESCO charges different per-unit rates based on the time of day. Peak hours carry a higher tariff to manage grid load during periods of maximum demand, while off-peak hours offer reduced rates to incentivize consumption outside peak windows.
TOU metering typically applies to consumers with 3-phase connections (sanctioned load above 5 kW) who have been issued a TOU-capable digital meter. Standard single-phase domestic connections on non-TOU meters pay a flat rate regardless of the time of use. Summer Peak Hours (April – October)
4-hour high-tariff demand window
All other hours (10:30 PM to 6:30 PM) are classified as off-peak and billed at the lower off-peak rate.
Winter Peak Hours (November – March)
4-hour high-tariff demand window
All other hours (9:00 PM to 5:00 PM) are classified as off-peak and billed at the lower off-peak rate.
Tips to Reduce Peak-Hour Electricity Costs
- Shift heavy loads: Run washing machines, water pumps, and irons during off-peak hours whenever possible.
- Pre-cool your home: If using air conditioning, lower the thermostat before peak hours begin and raise it slightly during peak.
- Monitor your TOU meter: Check the peak vs off-peak unit split on your bill to track how much of your consumption falls in each window.
